Cette couronne de lumière qui fait partie d'une série de huit provient de la Grande Mosquée de Kairouan. Il est probable que le prince ziride al-Mu'izz ibn Bâdîs en ait fait don à la Grande Mosquée en même temps que la grande lanterne à son nom.
Autour de l’anneau central circulaire rayonne une rosace à 18 branches dessinant des segments triangulaires couronnés de petits arcs outrepassés ; elle donne naissance à une seconde rosace aux tiges évoquant le monde végétal et aux arcs triangulaires. La bordure, chantournée, se compose en alternance de neuf orifices circulaires destinés à recevoir les godets et de neuf motifs en amande terminés par un nodule.
Le motif floral à base de feuille stylisée est très employé dans l’art ifriqiyen des IXe-Xe siècle : on le retrouve sur le mihrâb, le minbar et la maqsura de la Grande Mosquée de Kairouan. Trois chaînes réunies par un anneau de suspension sont chacune fixée au plateau à base d’un fleuron en amande de la bordure.
Ce type de couronne de lumière reprend des modèles byzantins et coptes, encore fabriqués à l’époque islamique, essentiellement dans l’aire méditerranéenne. L’artiste musulman a substitué de façon harmonieuse à la croix chrétienne des lustres antiques le fleuron trilobé ainsi que certains motifs géométriques conformes à l’esthétique islamique.
La parenté de ce type de pièce avec des objets chrétiens amena Georges Marçais à « conjecturer le rôle des chrétiens dans la pratique de l'art du métal et dans sa transmission d'Égypte en Espagne »[1].
Ce luminaire kairouanais offre des analogies certaines avec des polycandelon découverts en Syrie, en Égypte et en Espagne. Les pièces les plus représentatives furent découvertes lors des fouilles de Madînat Ilbîra[2] à Grenade. De la même trouvaille proviennent des exemples similaires à ceux de Kairouan. La parenté frappante entre les modèles kairouanais et hispaniques permet d’évoquer la possible existence d'une école de dinanderie commune à l'Occident musulman. D'ailleurs, il semble que cette technique ait essaimé en Espagne chrétienne, comme le prouve un luminaire provenant d’une église chrétienne non identifiée et conservé au British Museum à Londres.
