Cette bouteille en verre émaillé et doré a été produite vers 1250 en Syrie, à la fin de l’époque ayyubide.
Entre des bandeaux bleus ornés de frises à caractère très islamique se déploie un vaste décor narratif. Quatre édifices religieux, églises ou couvents, habités par des clercs, sont séparés par quatre scènes agricoles. Parmi les constructions, on reconnaît une église avec son fronton et ses clochers. Le porche ouvert laisse voir le chœur et ses lampes. De grandes jarres ceinturées d’étoffes sont posées devant l’autel.
Quel est le message de ce décor ? On a souvent pensé que les scènes agricoles représentaient les quatre saisons de l’année. Mais l’hypothèse est fragile : dans l’art islamique, les saisons sont symbolisées d’une autre manière. L’iconographie de la bouteille réfère essentiellement aux fruits de l’automne et aux produits qu’on en tire : le vin, la bière de dattes, le jus de pommes ou de grenades. Les petits fruits transportés par l’âne sont probablement des olives destinées à fournir l’huile de la communauté. Les jarres placées au pied de l’autel conservent le vin pour la messe. Il s’agit d’une illustration en relation directe avec ce que pourrait contenir la bouteille elle-même.
Ces scènes agricoles sont également des images d’abondance, de bénédiction, de félicité. Le décor a choisi de retracer un moment de la vie quotidienne qui soit plaisant à tous et qui pouvait être agréé aussi bien par un commanditaire chrétien que musulman.
La technique de verrerie employée dans cette pièce a été une des gloires des ateliers proche-orientaux. Très admiré en Méditerranée, ce procédé d’émaillage et de dorure ne sera maîtrisé qu’un siècle et demi plus tard par les verriers de Venise.
