À partir de 1936, les travaux de restauration se sont succédé, tout d’abord sous la direction de Leopoldo Torres Balbás, puis, entre 1970 et 1985, sous celle de Luis Berges. Déclarés « Bien d’intérêt culturel » en 1931, ces bains sont placés sous la protection de l’État.
Construit pour servir de bains publics à la ville de Jaén, cet établissement était un élément essentiel de l’architecture civile andalouse. Les bains ont été dotés d’arcs en plein cintre et d’arcs outrepassés, de voûtes en berceaux continus. Les colonnes présentent des bases et des chapiteaux en pierre calcaire ouvragée et des fûts en pierres maçonnées. Quelques traces de décoration subsistent : des petites colonnades, des compositions géométriques peintes en ocre rouge.
Héritier des traditions romaines, ce complexe est sans doute le plus important édifice musulman qui ait été conservé dans la ville de Jaén. Sa surface en fait un des plus grands bains arabes de la péninsule Ibérique. Il est constitué, conformément à l’usage, de salles parallèles et contiguës faisant suite à un vestibule. On trouve la salle froide, la salle tiède, de plan carré, qui possède un bassin d’ablutions en pierres calcaires taillées ; la salle chaude orientée nord-est/sud-ouest comporte un reste de décor peint, formant des motifs d’entrelacs.
Sous le sol, les conduits de chauffage émanant de la chaudière communiquent avec six cheminées verticales. Le pavement primitif était en marbre, remplacé plus tard par des dalles en pisé. Les voûtes laissaient passer la lumière par des ouvertures dont les formes diffèrent dans chaque salle. Sur le mur opposé à l’entrée s’élève un arc en plein cintre derrière lequel se trouve la chaudière. De chaque côté se trouvent deux chambres carrées et voûtées. Sur le côté droit, étaient aménagées deux latrines munies d’eau froide.
Ces bains sont très représentatifs de l’architecture civile réalisée sur le territoire d’al-Andalus. Des bains semblables, construits à la même époque, existent à Grenade, à Ronda (Málaga), et à Cordoue. Ceux de l’Alhambra, plus tardifs, présentent des décors différents.
En 1246, lors de la prise de Jaén par les chrétiens, ces bains n’ont pas subi de dommages importants. À partir du XVe siècle, ils ont cessé d’être utilisé et furent transformés en tannerie ; leur intérieur en porte encore des traces. À la fin du XVIe siècle, le comte de Villardompardo, Don Fernando de Torres y Portugal, fit construire son palais sur ces anciens bains qui furent alors incorporés aux caves de la nouvelle demeure. Ils tombèrent ensuite dans l’oubli jusqu’à ce que Don Emilio Romero de Torres en découvre une petite partie, en 1913. Leur état actuel de conservation est satisfaisant ; les différentes campagnes d’intervention pour les préserver ont suscité de nombreuses études.
