Sur le bord de la coiffe, à l’arrière d’un galon bleu, inscription en graphie cursive: « Le Seigneur est celui qui réconforte (ou qui redonne joie) ». (traduction).
Cette coiffe a été trouvée dans le cercueil de l’Infant de Castille Don Fernando de la Cerda, fils d’Alfonso VIII et de Leonor d’Angleterre, mort prématurément à vingt et un ans, en 1211. Elle en a été extraite en 1943 puis déposée dans le Musée du Monasterio de las Huelgas de Burgos. Son état de conservation est très satisfaisant. Seul manque un morceau qui a été découpé.
Cette coiffe a été réalisée à partir d’un tissu d’époque almohade. Le tissu, réalisé selon la technique de la tapisserie, a été enrichi de broderies de fils de soie blancs et bleus et de fils entourés d’or d’une grande pureté. Elle est formée de deux parties réunies sur la calotte et d’une bande destinée à être fixée autour du cou ; une mentonnière y est accrochée. La coiffe est rembourrée de laine. La doublure est en toile renforcée par des bandes de cuir dorées. Une inscription, caractéristique de l’époque almohade, se détache en or et en blanc sur fond bleu. Le décor s’inscrit dans des bandes parallèles qui enferment des motifs géométriques parmi lesquels le « nœud du bonheur » est le plus fréquent.
Selon Ibn Khaldûn, les premiers souverains almohades n’avaient pas d’atelier spécialisé dans les tissus en soie et en or destinés aux souverains (tirâz) ; cependant, comme le montre, entre autres, cette pièce, et comme en témoignent al-Idrîsî et al-Himyari, l’activité textile s’est perpétuée, créant des tissus luxueux comme celui de cette coiffe.
Au XIIIe-XIVe siècle, en Égypte mamluke, la fabrication de tissus à décor ordonné en bandes était également très répandue. Bien souvent, outre les motifs animaliers et floraux, l’écriture était utilisée[1]. Par ailleurs, l’utilisation de tissus luxueux commandés aux ateliers musulmans est une pratique répandue dans les royaumes chrétiens de la Péninsule ibérique au Moyen Âge[2].
Cette coiffe forme un tout homogène avec :
- les tissus provenant de la tombe de l’Infant, aussi bien ceux qui recouvraient la sépulture que ceux utilisés pour confectionner ses habits[3].
- le tissu du coussin de sa sœur, Leonor de Castille, morte en 1244[4].
