Logro el grado más alto en hermosura
y a los hombre de mundo mi ser pasma.
Nadie espacio más grande vio que el mío,
por igual en Oriente y Occidente,
ni rey, cristiano o árabe, tuvo antes
una fuerte que a mí se pareciera.
Soy como órbita de agua que a los hombres
manifiesta reluce y no se oculta ;
mar muy grande, cerrado por riberas
de bellísimo mármol escogido.
Mi agua es perlas fundidas, que por hielo
ves correr (tenlo a grande maravilla),
y, por diágana el agua, a través suyo,
ni un instante de ti desaparezco.
Se diría que yo y el agua pura
que contengo y por mí se desparrama
masa somos de hielo, que una parte
se fundió, y otra parte no se fund.
Cuando flotan burbujas, me imaginas
una esfera en que salen muchos astros,
y, cual concha de nácar por de fuera,
junto dentro ese aljófar de burbujas.

Carved out of a single block of marble, this basin decorated with gadroons was perhaps originally located in the Court of the Gilded Room of the Alhambra, which now contains its replica. Under Charles V, between 1526 and 1538, during the construction of the new emperor’s apartments in the Court of Daraxa, also known as the Court of the Orange Trees or the Court of the Marbles, it was placed in the centre of the lower courtyard of the Palace of the Lions, now known as the Court of Lindaraja. The specific forms of the basin were used to make a somewhat baroque new fountain in the style popular at the time. In order to preserve it, the fountain is now on display in the Museo de la Alhambra.
The imposing marble object – over two metres high – is decorated with seventy sculpted galloons alternating with thirty foils. Along the outside of the item runs an epigraphic frieze in cursive script that is of particular interest. This inscription, which does not completely encircle the object, suggests that the decoration remained unfinished. In the centre is an outlet through which water may escape. Translated by the Arabist Emilio García Gómez, the inscription is made up of twenty verses written by Ibn Zamrak, a poet and the vizier of Muhammad V, whose esoteric verses are also found in the rooms of the Alhambra. The poem, although of lesser quality than the one that decorates the renowned Fountain of the Lions, is skilfully executed.
