Cette coupe d’assez grande dimension repose sur un pied annulaire. La paroi, évasée, présente aux deux tiers de sa hauteur une carène puis un profil vertical, terminé par une lèvre bifide. Fortement restaurée, la pièce est couverte d’une glaçure de couleur jaune clair dont l’altération s’explique sans doute par son long séjour dans la terre.
A l’intérieur, le bord vertical est couvert d’un décor de quadrillage vert et brun. Sur le fond, trois cercles tangents sont tracés en vert, chacun d’eux étant meublé par un lion au galop, la tête retournée vers l’arrière, la queue terminée par un fleuron, relevée sur le dos et le corps couvert d’un fin guillochis, que l’on retrouve dans les triangles séparant le cadre circulaire. Des bandes vertes cernées de brun sont tracées soulignent le pourtour extérieur de l’objet.
Le lion, symbole de puissance et de pouvoir, est un thème très courant sur tous les supports et dans toutes les régions du monde islamique. Mis à part la céramique, on le rencontre sur le bois, l’ivoire, la sculpture sur pierre, le verre émaillé, la miniature et le textile.
Parmi les nombreux exemples, citons plusieurs pyxides et coffrets en ivoire andalous[1], des objets fatimides comme une plaque de revêtement en ivoire[2]. Le thème du lion est repris dans l'iconographie normande de Sicile au Palais Royal de Palerme, dans la chambre de Roger II, où figure un décor dans lequel deux lions affrontés aux queues fleuronnés rappellent étrangement les lions des plats ifriqiyens. Sans doute est-ce là le rappel de l’emblème de la dynastie normande des Hauteville. De même, le manteau dit « de Roger II » conservé à Vienne, comporte un décor composé de deux lions terrassant deux chameaux de part et d'autre d'un arbre de vie, symbole de la victoire des Normands sur les musulmans.
Remarquons aussi que le thème des trois animaux disposés en ronde ou par groupe ternaire en girouette n’est pas rare dans l'iconographie islamique[3].
