Ce panneau rectangulaire est entouré d’un cadre lisse. Dans le champ central est sculpté en bas-relief un récipient d’où jaillissent deux rinceaux de vigne qui, en s’entrecroisant, dessinent un huit et occupent la majeure partie de la surface. On connaît de nombreux exemples de panneaux similaires, seuls ou intégrés à des ensembles plus importants, comme une porte[1], ou un coffret[2]. Un ensemble de panneaux comparables servait aussi de décor dans la mosquée al-Aqsa à Jérusalem.
Le motif du vase d’où jaillissent des rinceaux végétaux existe déjà bien avant l’Islam dans tout le monde méditerranéen, marqué par la culture classique. On le retrouve ainsi aussi bien en Tunisie romaine[3], que dans le monde byzantin[4] et copte[5]. Certaines œuvres sassanides en portent également. De même, la vigne, utilisée à Rome comme symbole bacchique, puis chrétien, s’est répandue bien avant le VIIe siècle dans tout l’Empire et dans les régions limitrophes. Ces deux motifs sont adoptés par l’art de l’Islam dès ses débuts. Le vase jaillissant apparaît dans les mosaïques du Dôme du Rocher (692) puis à Mshatta. Il continuera ensuite d’être employé au Moyen Âge et à la période moderne dans tout le monde islamique. Il en est de même pour la vigne, qui perd son caractère iconographique pour devenir un simple motif décoratif. La forme « en huit » des rinceaux rappelle à la fois la porte de l’église Sainte-Barbara du Caire, et les placages de bronze du linteau de l’entrée est, au Dôme du Rocher, alors que les mosaïques du même monuments suivent des enroulements plus complexes.
Une particularité de ce panneau est le récipient, en forme de cylindre évasé et à décor de hachures, d’où jaillissent les motifs végétaux. Loin de suivre les formes classiques romano-byzantines, habituelles dans ce type de décor, ce vase semble en fait être une vannerie, proche de celle qui sert de mangeoire à un âne sur un panneau copte presque contemporain. On la retrouve également dans les mosaïques chrétiennes pré-islamiques de Qasr al-Hallabat (Jordanie).
