Este panel rectangular está rodeado por un marco liso. En la zona central aparece esculpido en bajo relieve un recipiente del que surgen dos zarcillos de vid que se entrelazan dibujando un ocho y ocupan la mayor parte de la superficie. Se conocen numerosos ejemplos de paneles similares, independientes o integrados en conjuntos más importantes, como una puerta[1] o un cofre[2]. Un conjunto de paneles de similares características decoraba la mezquita de Al-Aqsa en Jerusalén.
Las vasijas o vasos manantes son anteriores al Islam en todo el mundo mediterráneo, marcado por la cultura clásica. Aparece también en el Túnez romano[3], así como en el mundo bizantino[4] y copto[5]. Algunas obras sasánidas lo emplean también. Asimismo, la vid, símbolo báquico en Roma y posteriormente cristiano, se extiende mucho antes del siglo VII por todo el imperio romano y las regiones limítrofes. Estos dos motivos serán adoptados por el arte islámico desde sus inicios. La vasija manante aparece en los mosaicos de la Cúpula de la Roca (692) y posteriormente en Mshatta. Seguirá empleándose en la Edad Media y en la época moderna en todo el mundo islámico. Lo mismo ocurrirá con la vid, que al perder su carácter iconográfico se convertirá en un motivo exclusivamente decorativo. La forma de «ocho» de las ramas trae asimismo a la memoria la puerta de la iglesia de Santa Bárbara de El Cairo y las placas de bronce del dintel de la entrada Este, en la Cúpula de la Roca, mientras que los mosaicos del mismo monumento presentan volutas entrelazadas más complejas.
Una de las particularidades de este panel es el recipiente cilíndrico de boca ancha, decorado con rayas, del que brotan los motivos vegetales. Lejos de seguir la estética clásica romano-bizantina habitual en este tipo de decoración, en este caso la vasija parece una cesta, como la que utiliza un burro para comer en un panel copto prácticamente contemporáneo. Aparece asimismo en los mosaicos cristianos preislámicos de Qasr al-Hallabat (Jordania).
