The medicine practised in Andalusia followed in the line of that developed in the Orient, thanks notably to the translation of Greek, Iranian and Indian scientific works into Arabic. In Andalusia, a great contribution was made to this development by one exceptional personality: the Cordoban doctor al-Zahrawi (Abulcasis) (tenth century). The high point of Andalusian medicine is undoubtedly his medical publication “Kitâb al-tasrîf li-man ‘ajiza ‘an al-ta’alîf” – known in English as “The method of Medicine”, which was a compilation of all of Antiquity’s medical knowledge. It is remarkable for its exhaustive range of descriptions of medical techniques. Gerardo de Cremona translated it into Latin in Toledo during the twelfth century and this contributed to the fame of its author both in the east and the west.
Amongst other subjects, there is an extensive treatise on surgery. Some of the manuscripts are illustrated by images of surgical instruments: spatulas, needles, scalpels, saws, forceps, syringes, hooks, pincers etc.
Today, we can see certain of the medical instruments used in Andalusia in different museums such as the National Archaeological Museum, the Alicante Museum and the PRASA museum.
