Une formule arabe, en kufique sur la panse répète deux fois : « bénédiction complète et faveur totale ». Une autre inscription arabe gravée sur le dos d’un animal, près de la rosette : « de la main de Burd ibn Nûwas »
Cette boîte réalisée en ivoire d‘éléphant a la forme d’une sphère aplatie dont le fond est partiellement brisé. Le sommet du couvercle est renforcé par une plaque de cuivre. Sur les bords, ainsi que sur la panse, ont été fixées deux paires de rosettes superposées munies d’anneaux de suspension. La monture en cuivre doré se compose de deux tiges parallèles articulées épousant la courbure de la boîte et se terminant par deux pointes lancéolées.
La décoration est sculptée en faible relief. Une tresse borde chacune des calottes. Sur le couvercle figure une suite d’animaux : gazelles mordues par des lions, aigle attaquant un oiseau. Sur la panse apparaissent des paons affrontés et une frise de gazelles. Le décor animalier et le type de ferrures suggèrent une origine hispano-mauresque plutôt que sicilienne. Les animaux n’ont ni le dynamisme, ni les têtes légèrement hypertrophiées que l’on remarque dans les ivoires d’Amalfi ou de Salerne. Quant au système de fermeture, il est similaire à celui de la plupart des coffrets en ivoire fabriqués en Espagne médiévale.
L'objet, aujourd'hui déposé dans la cathédrale de Carcassonne, provient de l'abbaye Saint-Pierre Saint-Paul de Caunes-Minervois (Aude). Son origine musulmane ne fait aucun doute. Le style un peu hésitant des représentations animalières indique un atelier de second ordre, peut être mudéjar, où des artisans musulmans auraient travaillé sous contrôle chrétien. Il pourrait s'agir aussi d'un atelier d’al-Andalus produisant pour l'exportation, par exemple un atelier actif à la fin de l'époque des Taïfas (1091). Dans ce cas, l’oeuvre serait plus ancienne qu'on ne le croit.
Cette production de luxe s’adressait à des maisons princières ou à de riches églises qui les commanditaient. Le thème des paons affrontés appartient d’ailleurs aux deux cultures. Le volume même de l’objet correspond à celui d’une custode renfermant des hosties, ou à une boîte-reliquaire que ses anneaux de suspension permettaient d’exposer.
Quoi qu’il en soit, les thèmes animaliers, comme les inscriptions en kufique utilisés dans ces ouvrages précieux, seront souvent imités par les artistes romans à la même époque qui les percevaient comme de purs ornements. On les retrouve dans la décoration des chapiteaux d’église, ou dans l’iconographie des manuscrits à peintures, ainsi qu’il apparaît dans les riches illustrations du Commentaire de l’Apocalypse de Beatus de Liébana.
