La ville de Poreč se situe sur la côte adriatique orientale, en Istrie (Croatie). Cette ville antique est le siège d’un évêché, attesté depuis le IVe siècle. Sous l’épiscopat de l’évêque Euphrase, au milieu du VIe siècle, le complexe épiscopal est largement réaménagé. La cathédrale, dédiée à la Vierge Marie, se voit alors dotée d’un nouveau sanctuaire à trois absides ornées de mosaïque.
La mosaïque de l’abside principale, revêtant l’arc triomphal, la demi-coupole et le mur de l’abside, présente encore aujourd’hui un parfait état de conservation. Son répertoire iconographique reflète clairement la conjoncture religieuse et politique à l’époque de l’empereur Justinien Ier et le rôle important pris par l’Istrie dans la politique de l’empire byzantin.
La mosaïque sur l’arc triomphal représente le Christ avec les douze apôtres accompagnés d’inscriptions indiquant leur nom. Le Christ bénissant est représenté sur le globe, il porte un livre ouvert où l’on peut lire « Ego sum lux vera » (Je suis la vraie lumière). Les apôtres habillés en blanc se détachent du fond doré. L’intrados de l’arc triomphal est orné d’une rangée de médaillons à l’effigie de saints sur un fond sombre tandis que le médaillon central représente l’Agnus Dei (Agneau de Dieu) entouré d’étoiles.
Le motif principal qui montre le Christ tenu par la Vierge sur le trône, entourés d’anges et de saints martyrs, occupe la calotte de l’abside. Sur fond doré, les figures se dressent sur une pelouse vert tendre parsemée des fleurs, tandis qu’au-dessus de leurs têtes s’étend un ciel chargé de nuages d’où surgit une main tenant la couronne. Parmi les personnages représentés on distingue saint Mauro, martyr et premier évêque de Poreč, l’évêque Euphrase, bâtisseur de la cathédrale tenant le modèle de son église dans les mains, et l’archidiacre Claude accompagné de son fils.
Dans le registre inférieur se succèdent les personnages de saint Jean-Baptiste et de saint Zacharie, et les scènes de l’Annonciation et de la Visitation représentées sur les deux panneaux de chaque côté de l’abside. Une guirlande en stuc sépare la mosaïque des décorations de la partie inférieure de l’abside, réalisées en opus sectile multicolore.
A partir du VIe siècle, l’épanouissement du culte de la Vierge s’épanouit à Poreč sous l’influence byzantine. Un riche programme décoratif se développe rapidement. Les investissements impériaux en Istrie, dont la basilique d’Euphrase constitue un bon exemple, témoignent des liens étroits qui unissent la ville et sa région à Constantinople.
