Sur la partie haute et sur la partie basse du corps, sur deux lignes, en graphie naskhî : la devise dynastique des Nasrides : « Dieu seul est vainqueur ».
Sur le bord inférieur de la pièce, une inscription en lettres cursives :
« Au nom de Dieu, le Clément, le Miséricordieux. Que la bénédiction divine soit sur notre seigneur Muhammad et sur sa famille, le salut et la paix. [Ceci a été fait] sur ordre de notre seigneur, sa majesté le sultan, celui qui est l’objet de Ses faveurs, le victorieux, le juste, le bienheureux, le conquérant de villes, celui qui, parmi tous Ses serviteurs, porte au plus haut la justesse de la conduite, l’émir des Musulmans, Abû ‘Abd Allâh, fils de notre seigneur al-Gâlib bi-llâh, le victorieux, celui qui bénéficie de la protection divine, le prince des croyants Abî ‘Abd Allâh, que Dieu (qu’Il soit loué !) lui vienne en aide… que Dieu lui accorde une place élevée et l’accomplissement de ses désirs, fruits d’une intention pure et d’une véritable certitude. Ceci a été [réalisé] durant le mois béni de Rabî‘, l’an 705 H. Que Dieu soit loué ! »
Cette lampe était probablement suspendue à l’origine dans la mosquée de l’Alhambra de Grenade. Elle fit partie ensuite de la collection du cardinal Francisco Cisneros qui l’a transmise au Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso à Alcalá de Henares. Elle passa enfin dans les collections du Museo Arqueológico Nacional de Madrid en tant que bien assigné sur les fonds de l’État, le 20 Mars 1868.
Elle se décompose en plusieurs éléments. La tige verticale est formée de tubes cylindriques alternant avec quatre sphères, la plus haute en forme de bulbe, munie du crochet de suspension, les trois autres de taille croissante, la dernière prenant appui sur un tronc de cône à huit faces. Elles sont ornées de végétaux et d’épigraphies ajourées. Le corps même de la lampe, tronconique, est composé de quatre panneaux.
Le décor végétal et épigraphique a été réalisé avec un sens parfait de l’équilibre entre les pleins et les creux. L’inscription se détache sur un fond couvert de tiges courbes meublé d’une fine arabesque feuillue agrémentée de palmettes et de bourgeons.
Cette lampe nous est parvenue sans les larges bras munis de gonds qui s’ouvraient à partir du tronc de pyramide et formaient une couronne dont seules subsistent quelques articulations. Seize paires de bras, réparties en deux séries placées à des hauteurs différentes, supportaient des godets de cristal où les lumières flottaient sur l’huile.
Même sans ses couronnes de lumière, cette magnifique lampe constitue une des pièces maîtresses de l’art du métal andalou. Sans doute s’agissait-il de la lampe principale de la mosquée de l’Alhambra, fondée par Muhammad III. A. Fernández Puertas pense qu’elle était probablement suspendue dans la nef centrale, devant le mihrâb. La structure polygonale de la lampe s’inspire peut-être de la forme d’une cloche adaptée en lampe[1]. M. Gómez Moreno a remarqué qu’une lampe de la madrasa al-‘Attarin de Fès, fondée en 1323, possède un décor végétal ajouré comparable à celui de la lampe de Muhammad III : il se pourrait que toutes deux aient été produites à Grenade.
Des lampes à corps tronconique existent en Anatolie seldjukide[2]. Quelques chercheurs voient par ailleurs dans le décor de cette lampe une influence stylistique de l’art développé dans cette région[3]. D’autres sont connues en Syrie et en Égypte mamluke[4].
