This fragment of a cup with a handle stands on a circular convex base and has a lower section wider than the rim. The porous clay used in its manufacture includes traces of slate, limestone and mica.
The decoration, which is brown in colour, is mainly epigraphic with an unfortunately incomplete inscription in Kufic script: “unlimited blessings and perfect well-being […]”. According to S. Lopez Martinez, this is one of the oldest examples of such use of the cuerda seca technique conserved in Mertola. It differs from similar pieces by its ornamental style and the use of calligraphy and this enables us to date it from the twelfth century.
The cuerda seca technique was imported from the orient at the same time as the use of decorative coloured glazing in “green and brown”, which was widely used in Andalusia during the Umayyad era and later. The technique consists of drawing a number of “compartments” on the surface of the object using manganese oxide mixed with an oily substance. These compartments were subsequently filled in with coloured glazing. This method ensures that the colours remain within their borders after firing. During the firing of the object, the manganese oxide evaporates and leaves behind a delicate black line.
