Cette tasse fragmentaire dotée d’une anse repose sur une petite base annulaire convexe et présente une panse carénée dans sa partie basse. Sa pâte poreuse de couleur beige présente des inclusions d’ardoise, de calcaire et de mica.
Son décor, brun, est essentiellement épigraphié en caractères kufique ; aujourd’hui incomplète, l’inscription en arabe mentionne : « bénédiction complète et [bien-être] total […] ». Selon S. Lopez Martinez, il s’agit de l’une des plus anciennes pièces réalisée en cuerda seca partielle conservées à Mertola ; son style ornemental et calligraphique se distingue des autres pièces et permet de la dater du XIIe siècle.
La technique de la cuerda seca, importée d’Orient en même temps que le décor glaçuré polychrome appelé « vert et brun », fut très utilisée en Andalousie à l’époque omeyyade et aux périodes postérieures. Elle consiste à dessiner sur la surface de la pièce, à l’aide d’oxyde de manganèse mélangé à une matière grasse, une série de compartiments à l’intérieur desquels sont déposées des glaçures colorées. Grâce à cette méthode, les différentes couleurs sont parfaitement délimitées à l’issue de la cuisson. En cuisant, le mélange à base d’oxyde de manganèse s’évapore pour ne laisser sur la pièce qu’un mince trait noir.
