Sur les sites archéologiques, les verres non décorés constituent, avec la céramique non glaçurée, le matériel le plus fréquent. Intéressant par son très bon état de conservation, ce flacon en verre soufflé, dont les deux anses rattachent le col à une panse arrondie et aplatie, est dénué de toute décoration. Sa forme rappelle les gourdes dites « de pèlerins » en terre cuite, populaires dans la région du Moyen-Orient depuis l’Antiquité[1]. Sa petite taille suggère qu’il aurait servi à contenir de l’onguent ou du parfum, à l’image des nombreux aspersoirs connus pour les périodes ayyubide et mamluke en Égypte et en Syrie.
Mise au point dans la région syro-palestinienne dès le milieu du premier siècle avant J.-C., la technique du soufflage a fortement transformé la production verrière en facilitant et en accélérant la production de récipients en verre et en favorisant leur diffusion auprès des classes moins aisées. Le technique permet en effet de créer une grande variété de forme en peu de temps. À la chute de l'Empire romain d’Occident, l'art du verre connut un fort déclin en Europe, tandis qu’il se développait dans l'Empire byzantin et dans différentes régions du Proche et du Moyen-Orient comme au Liban et en Syrie, anciennes provinces romaines. Au Liban, Baalbek était un centre important de production de verre au regard de la quantité de fragments découverts durant les fouilles. D’autres sites comme Tyr et Beyrouth ont aussi révélé la présence d’ateliers de verriers.
