Réalisée selon les techniques du filigrane et du grènetis, cette bague d’une grande finesse a été découverte dans la région de la Beqaa, sans contexte archéologique, et fait partie d’un lot de bijoux en or acquis par le Musée national de Beyrouth. Elle est en excellent état de conservation, ce qui atteste la solidité de sa structure. Dans le chaton rectangulaire à bordure géométrique, le mot « pouvoir » en arabe est tracé en kufique ; le reste de la surface est complètement couvert de motifs géométriques.
Plusieurs bagues du même type sont présentes dans diverses collections. L’une d’elle, attribuée à l’Égypte ou à la Syrie, présente un travail très proche ainsi qu’une inscription illisible[1]. D’autres bagues similaires sont conservées dans les collections Nasser D. Khalili (Londres) et Zucker. Comme la céramique ou les tissus, les bijoux pouvaient être ornés de formules votives à l’intention de leurs destinataires, pour la plupart anonymes.
Les techniques de granulation et de filigrane en orfèvrerie, issues d’une longue tradition antique, hellénistique et iranienne, sont bien attestées à l’époque fatimide, où elles atteignent un apogée. On les trouve sur de nombreux bijoux en or, boucles d’oreilles, colliers, parements de ceintures… Le filigrane est aussi utilisé, à la même époque, sur diverses œuvres occidentales.
Le destinataire de ce bijou aurait pu être une femme aussi bien qu’un homme : en dépit de l’interdiction du port de l’or par les hommes en islam, les sources médiévales témoignent de l’existence de parures en or serties de pierres précieuses portées par des hommes.
