Cette coupe de grandes dimensions repose sur un pied annulaire bas, de profil oblique. Elle est munie d’une lèvre simple peu éversée.
Le décor a été réalisé dans des coloris vert et brun sur fond blanc. Le fond est occupé par un décor épigraphique où le mot al-mulk (« la puissance ») est répété deux fois sur une même ligne. La graphie kufique aux hampes terminées par des biseaux concaves est largement en usage au Xe siècle. Les autres spécimens de coupe à décor épigraphique attribuables à l'époque aghlabide présentent une écriture plus fine.
Le décor est tracé à l’intérieur de deux cercles concentriques ondés, formés chacun de trois anneaux verts et d’une onde brune médiane. Ces compositions décoratives sont la transcription locale de modèles orientaux, attestés en Mésopotamie, sur des coupes datées des IXe-Xe siècles[1], présentant souvent un décor monochrome sur fond blanc.
Des décors épigraphiques comportant le même mot al-mulk sont attestés sur des plats andalous d’époque omeyyade[2]. La même formule, témoignant d’un goût commun aux différentes populations de la Méditerranée occidentale, apparait encore cinq siècles plus tard sur la céramique espagnole de Paterna (fin XIVe - début XVe siècle).
L’épigraphie constitue un thème décoratif représentatif et distinctif de l’art islamique. Les termes les plus répandus au Maghreb et en Espagne sont : al-mulk (« la puissance »), al-mālik (« le puissant ») et al-mulk lillah (« la souveraineté est à Dieu »). Ces invocations répétées souvent plusieurs fois sur la même ligne font référence au pouvoir de Dieu, seul maître de l’Univers.
Remarquons que la palette verte et blanche était en vogue aux IXe-Xe siècles à Samarcande, en Irak et surtout en Andalousie à l'époque califale (Xe siècle).
