L’ascension céleste représentée par la montée d’une échelle ou d’un escalier, est un symbole ancien et répandu. On le trouve présent dans la Bible, où Jacob vit en songe « une échelle dont le sommet touchait le ciel ; des anges de Dieu y montaient et y descendaient » (Genèse XXVIII 12). Le thème de l’ascension de l’âme vers le ciel occupe de ce fait une place importante dans la littérature spirituelle juive, notamment dans ceux de la mystique de la Merkabah (vers les Ve–VIe siècles), décrivant l’ascension de l’initié à travers les sept Palais célestes.
Il est également très présent dans la tradition musulmane, à travers le récit de l’ascension céleste que le prophète Muhammad aurait accompli depuis Jérusalem, traversant les sept cieux, jusqu’à la présence même de Dieu. C’est le mi‘râj, terme qui désigne une échelle, d’où le titre de la traduction latine du récit, Liber scale Machometi. Ce récit est central dans la tradition musulmane ; il trace l’exemple même du chemin de l’homme guidé vers Dieu. Même si la précellence de Muhammad est conservée – seul, il aurait accompli ce voyage corporellement, les mystiques ne l’aurait vécu qu’en esprit – le modèle prophétique a été reproduit maintes fois. Le mystique traverse les différents cieux marquant à chaque fois un nouveau niveau de connaissance, jusqu’à dépasser le septième ciel et parvenir en présence de Dieu Lui-même. Parmi les grands mystiques musulmans ayant fait état et commenté de telles ascensions, citons Qushayrî (m. 1074) et Ibn ‘Arabî (m. 1240).
Un des auteurs chrétiens les plus connu pour avoir eu recours à ce symbolisme est saint Jean Climaque (m. vers 650). Il avait été moine, puis abbé au monastère de Sainte Catherine dans le Sinaï. Il est l’auteur d’un important livre de spiritualité intitulé précisément L’Echelle (klimax en grec) sainte. Le livre expose trente degrés de l’ascension spirituelle, autant que les années de la vie cachée de Jésus ; c’est le nombre des marches de l’échelle sur l’icône présentée ici. L’icône montre Jean Climaque, à gauche, prononçant des paroles en arabe et en grec tirées de son livre. A droite, des moines et moniales s’engagent sur l’échelle menant à Dieu, aidés par des anges. Mais l’ascension est longue. Surtout, elle est périlleuse : plus l’âme s’élève, plus elle est en danger d’une chute plus grave. Les démons tentent de faire chuter les mystiques, et certains y parviennent, allant jusqu’à faire tomber des moines dans un enfer symbolisé par la gueule d’un monstre. Ceux qui tiennent bon, par contre, sont accueillis par le Christ.
