Ce collier fait partie d’un lot d’objets en or provenant de la vallée de la Beqaa, sans contexte archéologique, et acquis par le musée national de Beyrouth. Il est composé de huit boules, de dix cylindres et d’un élément central creux en forme d’arc, décoré d’un dessin géométrique qui rappelle un tissage ou une vannerie, ponctué de petites boules. Cette petite boîte était peut-être destinée à contenir une amulette, comme dans le cas d’un autre objet conservé au Musée national de Damas[1] ; la couleur bleue de l’émail qui y est apposé revêt parfois, en Égypte, une symbolique prophylactique. Les autres éléments présentent une décoration de spirales entrelacées symétriquement, semblable à celle d’un autre collier appartenant au même ensemble. Deux boules sont en outre ceintes d’une inscription rehaussée d’un émail bleu, énonçant une formule de bons vœux au propriétaire. Le style de la graphie est datable de la période ayyubide ou du début de l’époque mamluke. Les éléments du collier auraient été enfilés sur un fil de soie. Ils étaient peut-être imbibés d’huiles parfumées, comme en attestent des sources littéraires de l’époque.
La technique du filigrane est issue d’une longue tradition antique méditerranéenne. Elle est devenue très populaire en Égypte à la période fatimide, où de nombreux orfèvres l’utilisent sur tous types de bijoux : colliers, mais aussi bracelets, bagues... Quant à l’émail cloisonné, déjà développé à l’époque romaine, il aurait été transmis aux Fatimides par les Byzantins, grâce à des artisans ayant émigré ou à des cadeaux diplomatiques. Il fut aussi pratiqué en Espagne, où il atteignit des sommets de qualité esthétique sous les Nasrides. En Égypte, l’émaillerie sur métal se poursuit sous les Ayyubides et les Mamluks, mais commence à décliner lentement : les spécimens datant de ces époques présentent un travail plus sommaire et moins méticuleux que ceux de l’époque fatimide.
