This earring pendant is part of a treasure discovered in the mountainous region of Tarabia, about twenty kilometres from the town of Le Kef, Tunisia, in 1930. It contained jewellery (pendants, bracelets, pearls) and ninety-two gold coins, the most recent of which – struck in Mahdiyya – are dated 1044–45.
Multilobed in shape, this earring features seven small crescent-shaped compartments. These extremely shallow compartments are all surrounded with twisted wire and arranged in an arc. The two compartments visible on each side of the pendant are decorated with five discs surrounded with twisted wire. Two discs decorate the corners; three others, arranged in a triangle, decorate the centre of the compartment. The horseshoe-shaped hoop is unadorned.
Although gold objects are extremely rare, in terms of shape and decoration this earring is similar to jewellery of Hispano-Moresque origin[1]. It perpetuates the filigree technique, which characterised a considerable number of Spanish jewels from the tenth to fifteen centuries. Although its decoration is less refined, this piece of jewellery has similarities to earrings found in Egypt[2], Syria and Iran[3] that date from the eleventh to thirteenth centuries.
