Cette œuvre est un bel exemple d’art mozarabe. L’appartenance de ces trois fragments à une seule croix a été beaucoup discutée. D’après Charles T. Little, le plus probable est qu’il s’agisse des vestiges d’un même objet. Le décor et les dimensions des trois bras sont très similaires. Chaque bras trapézoïdal, d’un seul tenant, présente des extrémités pattées et des côtés légèrement courbes. Les bras étaient rattachés à la hampe au niveau des extrémités, où l’on distingue une double perforation. Une fois assemblés, ils formaient une croix dont la forme, fréquente au Xe siècle, est un héritage de l’art wisigothique et des productions asturiennes.
Sur chaque bras, le décor issu d’un masque animal stylisé se développe uniquement sur la face principale, cernée d’un mince cordon végétal. La partie centrale, légèrement en retrait, ne présente aucun ornement. Elle était vraisemblablement dorée. Le décor de la guirlande suit l’esthétique des ivoires cordouans. On peut y voir des paires d’animaux alternativement affrontés et adossés (lions, cerfs, aigles et griffons) entourés de motifs végétaux. Les œuvres cordouanes sont à mettre en lien avec la tradition ornementale de l’Orient ancien, certainement véhiculée par des textiles. Les animaux sculptés sur les ivoires mozarabes de San Millán sont cependant moins réalistes et empreints de vie que leurs contemporains cordouans ; les motifs végétaux ont des tiges plus longues.
Ces bras ont été réalisés par l’atelier de sculpture de San Millán. Il est fort possible que des mozarabes venus de Cordoue se soient installés dans cette zone. Attirés par les conquêtes territoriales des rois chrétiens et par leur politique de repeuplement, ils ont sans doute abandonné al-Andalus et se sont établis plus au nord. L’influence des pratiques en cours dans l’atelier cordouan de Halaf (artiste qui signe une pyxide aujourd’hui conservée à New York, Hispanic Society of Islamic Art) est sensible dans les réalisations de San Millán. Ces fragments sont parmi les représentants les plus importants de l’art de la sculpture chrétienne d’influence islamique. Ils annoncent par leur côté un peu sec la production d’ivoires de la période des princes des Taifas.
