This monument, built for a Tunis dignitary who was also a politician, is located in an affluent neighbourhood of the medina of Tunis. The style of the palace, considered one of the finest in the medina, was very widespread during the 19th century. It comprises three parts: the section reserved for the main residence is on the ground floor; the commons are made up of a courtyard with four porticoes, surrounded by rooms; and the living area comprises rooms, some of which are built on a T-plan, opening onto a courtyard with two porticoes. The area reserved for guests is on the upper floor. The complex also contains a bathhouse and storerooms.
The limestone and the sandstone slabs were used
to frame the entrance door of the palace. The marble was reserved for the
columns, the capitals and the coping of the wells. In addition, marble slabs
frame the entrances to the rooms and were used for floor paving.
The façades on the courtyard are covered with sandstone panels and stucco. The
vaults were built with baked bricks. Wood was used to construct the leaves of
the doors, the joists and the roofing strips of the terrace roofs. The
decorative motifs are floral and geometric, with those that adorn the terrace
showing Italian and Hispano-Moresque influence. The stucco decorations are
inspired by Turkish and Andalusian styles.
