Cette aiguière à panse globulaire sur étroite base circulaire, à col cylindrique terminée par un manchon ajouré, possède un bec verseur en forme de coq et une haute anse, parallèle au col. Cette anse tubulaire, ornée de motifs floraux et de rangées de perles, s’accroche à hauteur des lèvres de l’objet en formant une crosse et à hauteur de la panse par un large motif folié en relief. La panse est ceinte d’une rangée de niches aux coupoles rayonnantes, dont les arcs reposent sur des colonnes. Chaque niche abrite des végétaux ou des animaux, parfois les deux.
Cette aiguière s’inscrit dans une série de six[1] découvertes dans différentes régions du monde islamique, y compris l’Asie Centrale. Les aiguières des VIIIe – IXe siècles, dans quelque matériau que ce soit ont en commun leur anse haute et parallèle au col, s’accrochant à hauteur de la lèvre de l’objet et sur la panse[2]. Selon Baer, la forme de la panse globulaire et du col tubulaire proviendrait de modèles romano-byzantins (notamment des bouteilles en verre) plus que sassanides.
Le bec verseur, un coq en ronde-bosse aux ailes ébouriffées et semblant jeter un cri, est rendu avec réalisme. Il n’est pas sans évoquer toute une série d’objets en bronze – oiseaux[3], coqs[4], mammifères[5], etc. – d’assez grande taille, des premiers siècles de l’Islam.
Le décor de niche, très courant à l’époque omeyyade, s’inscrit dans la lignée de l’art antique.
L’art du bronze a connu un âge d’or dans l’antiquité méditerranéenne et sassanide (224 – 651), puis s’est perpétué dans le monde islamique. Pour cette aiguière, les spécialistes avancent souvent généralement sur une datation omeyyade, en raison de son lieu de provenance, un cimetière qui porte le nom du dernier calife de la dynastie, mort en 750 en Egypte alors qu’il fuyait la vindicte abbasside.
